Cusco is getting ready to welcome thousands of tourists this holiday season. Saúl Caipani, head of Gercetur Cusco, told Agencia Andina that bookings for tours, hotels, restaurants, and excursions are already filling up. This confirms the large number of visitors expected in the city during Christmas and New Year.
The international travel magazine Condé Nast Traveler recently named Cusco as one of the best cities in the world to celebrate Christmas and New Year. This recognition has boosted interest in the city even more.
The main square, Plaza Mayor, will be the heart of the celebrations. On Christmas Eve, tourists can enjoy art exhibitions featuring handmade works by hundreds of local artisans. Visitors will find silver jewelry, paintings, woven fabrics, and other traditional crafts.
Every day, around 13,000 tourists arrive in Cusco by plane or bus. "Most of them are foreign visitors from the U.S., Europe, and Latin America, but many Peruvians also come. They are drawn by the magic of this sacred place, especially during the holidays," said Caipani.
The big celebration happens on December 31. The historic center becomes the main gathering spot for locals and tourists. People will join in traditional rituals, like honoring the Apus (sacred mountain spirits), walking around the plaza with suitcases for good luck, and enjoying colorful fireworks displays.
To ensure everyone stays safe, local authorities and police will be on alert. They will enforce order with the help of Civil Defense and the Public Ministry. This safety plan will help make sure visitors can enjoy the celebrations without worries.
