In June you can enjoy hiking, meeting locals and walking with llamas.
If you love nature, now is a great time to visit the Colca Valley in Arequipa. So far this year, 115,812 tourists have visited. That’s a bit more than the same period last year, says Autocolca, the group that manages the area.
From January to now, 62,937 Peruvians and 52,875 foreign visitors came. Most foreign tourists came from Europe. Others arrived from the U.S., Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay.
If you’re from Lima, Ica, Trujillo, Piura, Tacna, Moquegua, Cusco, or Puno, you’re not alone. Most local tourists this year are from these cities.
Solange Málaga Cáceres, Autocolca’s manager, says more people will visit soon. It’s the start of high season. Travel agencies already have many bookings.
If you come in June, you’ll see Caylloma Province celebrate its 200th birthday. There’s a full month of events. These activities are a big draw for visitors.
One event you should try is the Llama Trek. You walk with llamas dressed in local clothes. This year’s trek is on June 20. It goes through Callalli, Canocota, and Chivay. A local guide will walk with you. You’ll also meet people from nearby towns.
Want to join? You can get more info at Autocolca’s office or at local travel agencies.
