Thousands of tourists joined the celebration of Inti Raymi 2025, the Festival of the Sun, in Cusco's Plaza de Armas. This event marks Cusco Day and revives Inca traditions.
On the first stage, the actors acted out scenes on the esplanade of the ancient temple of Coricancha. There, the Inca leader welcomed groups from the four regions of the ancient Inca land: Chinchaysuyo, Qollasuyo, Contisuyo and Antisuyo.
The staging continued as the crowd moved to the Main Square Hawkaypata. People could be seen smiling and raising their hands as they waited for the Inca. He arrived with his Coya, his royal entourage and all his visiting delegations. Nearly 1,000 actors, including adults and children, participated.
One of the key scenes showed “The meeting of two worlds”. Actor David Ancca, in the role of the Inca, climbed the ushnu, the sacred platform. He asked for the reading of the coca leaves and called the mayor of Cusco.
The Inca asked him to love, teach and work for his people. The mayor gave him a brief report on his work and offered him a khipu, a rope tool formerly used for counting and administration. They spoke in Quechua.
The actors then walked through the main square. Thousands of people applauded loudly as they passed by.
The group then crossed Saphy Street and continued to the great field of Sacsayhuaman. There, the Inca ended the show by raising his hands towards the sun. He gave thanks for life and asked for good times to come.
This staging of the biggest Inca festival of the Tahuantinsuyo takes place every year. If you want to join and live it in person, you just have to visit Cusco in June, the jubilee month of the city.
June fills Cusco with color, music and dances. But, without a doubt, the main event is the Inti Raymi, the great Festival of the Sun.
