The big celebration started on December 16 at the Municipal Theater of Puno. The event included artistic shows and a colorful light display to reveal the festival's official program.
The schedule kicks off on February 1 and 2, 2025, with a contest of traditional dances. On February 9, 10, and 11, the festival will feature a costume contest and a grand parade in honor of the festivity's "octava" (eighth day celebration).
As part of the cultural event, the crowd enjoyed powerful dance performances. The National Police of Peru performed the Diablada, while the Centralistas of Puno danced Caporales. Other groups showcased Morenadas, Waca Waca, and Tuntuna, all of which are traditional Andean dances.
Puno’s mayor, Javier Ponce, called this festivity "the most important celebration in Peru." He also praised the skill of the dance groups, highlighting how they create symbolic shapes and messages through their choreography.
This festival is recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Every year, thousands of tourists come to Puno to experience the magic of the celebration.
Puno invites the world to join the Virgen de la Candelaria Festivity 2025. It promises faith, culture, and joy in a one-of-a-kind event.
