The Inca Trail, one of the most famous hiking routes in the world, will close in February 2025. The Decentralized Directorate of Culture of Cusco made this decision due to heavy rains and the need for maintenance.
Jorge Luis Moya Cohaguila, director of the institution, said that 30 specialists will work on conservation tasks. The team will clean and restore walls, stairways, canals, and fountains. They will also work on key archaeological sites.
Tourists can still visit Machu Picchu. One option is to take a train from the Sacred Valley to Aguas Calientes. Another option is the route through Hidroelectrica, which includes a longer hike. Hikers can also choose alternative treks like Salkantay Trek, Inca Jungle, or Lares Trek.
The Inca Trail is 43 kilometers long and takes about four days to complete. It is one of the most popular experiences for travelers. The Decentralized Directorate of Culture of Cusco recommends booking permits months in advance, especially in high season. Only authorized tour agencies can manage permits and organize trips.
Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu Mountain will remain open in February. However, it is best to buy tickets in advance due to high demand.
This temporary closure will help preserve this important heritage and ensure the safety of visitors.
