Electric buses, or eBuses, will now connect Aguas Calientes and the ancient city of Machu Picchu. These high-tech vehicles will carry tourists and locals through one of Peru's most famous landmarks.
Each eBus has a 250-kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery. This allows it to travel up to 250 kilometers on a single charge. Every day, these buses can transport more than 300 people.
“These eBuses will help cut about 40 tons of CO2 emissions each year,” said Walter Sciutto, general manager of Pluz Energía. “This directly protects the fragile ecosystem around Machu Picchu.”
Pluz Energía partnered with Consettur, the company managing tourist transport in the area, to lease the eBuses. They also set up electric charging stations to keep the buses running smoothly.
The arrival of the eBuses was celebrated at Pluz Energía's offices. Officials and business leaders came to see how these buses will benefit both travelers and the environment. Among the attendees were Raúl Pérez-Reyes, Minister of Transport and Communications; Elvis La Torre, Mayor of Aguas Calientes; Walter Sciutto, Pluz Energía’s general manager; and Carlos Solís Pino, manager of Pluz Soluciones.
This initiative marks a big step toward greener tourism in Machu Picchu.
